While pharmaceuticals can play an important role in treating a number of conditions, studies show that integrating mind/body practices into your self-care routine can boost your healing power from within. Try one of these mind/body activities to promote recovery from some common ailments.

Ease pain with yoga

According to recent studies, practicing yoga can help people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, low-back pain and many other types of chronic conditions. It combines breath control, meditation and movement to stretch and strengthen your muscles. And a study published in Annals of Internal Medicine  found that a weekly yoga class increases mobility more than standard medical care. Tackle digestive issues with acupuncture

The World Health Organization  now recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for more than 35 common illnesses. It’s known to normalize physiological functions, stimulate the immune system and aid in behavior modifications like weight loss and smoking cessation.

Exercise to ease symptoms of depression

The endorphins you get from exercise improve your mood, which can alleviate symptoms of depression. In fact, one study  found that walking fast for about 35 minutes a day five times a week, or 60 minutes a day three times a week, had a significant influence on mild-to-moderate depression symptoms. But the benefits don’t stop there. Regular exercise like jogging can help lower blood pressure, protect against heart disease and cancer and boost self-esteem. Try to get half an hour to an hour of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, on most days of the week.
