Individual & Family Marketplace in Tennessee.
In the Individual & Family health insurance Marketplace, or exchange, the federal government provides subsidies to keep your costs affordable from year-to-year. As market costs adjust annually, so do the savings opportunities. That means when premiums go up, so does the available assistance to help cover them. You can think of it as a built-in safety net that flexes to keep your healthcare costs budget-friendly.
You may be eligible for health insurance subsidies based on:
- Size of your household
- Your household’s estimated income
Federal subsidies are Advance Premium Tax Credits (APTC) and are not available to people eligible for Medicaid or Medicare or who have affordable coverage through an employer.
Tennessee uses the federally-facilitated marketplace (FFM), or , to pass along savings. This is where Bright Health is sold with subsidies that reduce your monthly health insurance premiums. If you have more questions, don't worry - we can help you determine whether you qualify.

Tennessee Health Insurance Subsidies 101
The “Affordable Care Act” refers to the law that provides numerous rights and protections that make health coverage fair and easy to understand, along with subsidies, making it more affordable. It’s sometimes known as “PPACA,” “ACA,” or “Obamacare.” The law also established exchanges or marketplaces where you can see if you qualify to receive tax credits and cost sharing, shop for plans, and get help.
When the ACA was signed into federal law in 2010, it established a federal marketplace for all states, or it allowed for each state to create its own state marketplace. Subsidized .
If you meet income-level qualifications, you may be eligible for Cost-sharing Reductions (CSR) on Silver-level plans only (The ACA marketplace uses metal tiers to describe plans, such as Gold, Silver, and Bronze.). With CSR plans, the government will help you out as your medical expenses grow. Specifically, the government subsidizes reductions of the maximum out-of-pocket limit as well as possible reductions in deductibles, coinsurance, or copayments.
Qualified Health Plans (QHP) are major medical plans that meet the requirement outlined in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare. These are the only plans that subsidies can be used with. QHPs are insurance plans that are certified by the government and provide essential health benefits (EHBs), and we offer them here at Bright Health.
