What is Medicare?

Medicare is health insurance provided by the federal government. The Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months surrounding your 65th birthday. It begins three months before your birthday month and ends three months after. It is important to sign up during these seven months to avoid penalty payments. We know Medicare can be complicated, so we've broken the basics down for you.

The four basic parts of Medicare

Medicare Part A and Part B are offered through the federal government, and make up what is called Original Medicare. Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (prescription drug) are offered by private insurers.

Part A

Hospital coverage

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home health care.

Hospital

Part B

Medical coverage

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, home health care, and many preventive services.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans combine Part A and B, and most often Part D prescription drug benefits, too. They also contain extra benefits and limit out-of-pocket spending.

Part D

Prescription drug coverage

Part D plans help pay for prescription drugs, which are not included in Original Medicare. There are standalone Part D plans, as well as Medicare Advantage plans that include Part D.
